Foster

Do you have an extra room or bathroom, or space for a playpen cage to foster a cat or litter of kittens? Even if you travel or only live in Santa Fe part time, you can help! Can’t foster now? How about helping us by coordinating with our fosters from home to see if they have all they need for supplies? There are lots of ways to help us foster.

  • “We fostered several litters of kittens. It’s been really fun to follow their stories, and they’ve gone to some of the most amazing forever homes.

It’s been so heartwarming to hear about their lives, being loved and loving life. We get so attached to the fosters, but watching them grow, both here and in their forever homes is incredibly enriching. It’s been a great experience for our family too.”

  • Karen Jo specializes in fostering in Feline Leukemia positive (FeLV+) cats who cannot live in close contact with non-FeLV cats.

“On the whole, taking care of a cat with FeLV is just like taking care of any other cat. I have had 3 cats recover completely. I now have 4 cats who have long outlived their expected lifetimes. Most of the time FeLV+ cats are in remission and act like perfectly healthy cats.”

  • “Fostering orphaned neonate kittens through adoption is a heart-warming and fulfilling experience. Nursing littles one creates special bonds.

Helping them grow up healthy isn’t always easy, but it always brings lots of smiles and cuddles, and seeing them live happily ever after with their forever families makes it all so worthwhile.”
    – Lisa and Judy

  • “I have been fortunate that every organization I have fostered for has provided tremendous resources to support me.

Everything from a 24-hour contact and advice to food, beds, boxes, playpens- anything you could possibly need. There is a saying, Saving one animal won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal.”
    – Christine

  • "I have enjoyed fostering for F&F for the past year. My children are so lucky to have had the opportunity to help care for numerous litters of kittens and older cats, too.

F&F takes chances on cats that have nowhere else to go and we aare proud to be an integral part of those life-saving efforts.”

Foster Under-Socialized Kitties -
hands on

Help out all year round by fostering just-weaned kittens, adolescents, or young adult cats that just need time in a home and attention to become ready for adoption. Typical duration: At least one month, possibly several, depending upon the cat(s).

Foster a Special Needs Cat -
hands on

Give a cat recovering from surgery, dealing with a chronic illness, or working through an emotional trauma a safe place to recuperate. Typical duration: At least one month, possibly several, depending upon the cat(s).

Foster Senior Cats - hands on

Help out all year round by giving a senior kitty a safe, quiet place to spend their golden years. Many seniors come to us when their person dies – these cats are often sad and just need someone to show them love. Typical duration: Ongoing or as long as you wish.

Foster Semi-Feral Cats - hands on

Help a semi-feral cat who demonstrates promise to become a well-socialized house cat. Many of these cats arrive after being trapped but make a miraculous transformation given the chance to spend time in a household with a kind, patient foster parent. Typical duration: Varies from months to a year, but even a short home stay can help.

Foster Home Coordinator - at home

Follow up with approved foster homes to assign a cat [or cats] and track their progress and needs.  Serve as the contact person when food or supplies are needed or vet care is required. This task requires good organization and communication skills and significant time commitment.

Foster Liaison - hands on

Help transport supplies and equipment to our foster families in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. Assist with transport of kittens and cats to various adoption events and medical appointments. Help assist foster families by answering cat/kittens questions and concerns
